Four Tips To Tell Your Children You are Getting a Divorce

Divorce is hard on everyone involved. It becomes even worse when you have children. It doesn’t matter how old they are, you are going to dread telling them about the changes that will be happening in their lives.

Here are some tips to telling your children that you are getting a divorce.

  • Choose the right time. You need to tell your children when everyone is calm and relaxed. Also, make sure that you have plenty of time to answer any questions that they may have.
  • Stay calm during the discussion. You need to stay calm for your children. They are going to look to you on how to react. If you are crying uncontrollably or very anxious, they are going to see that and react the same way.
  • Be prepared. Make sure that you are ready for the discussion and possible questions that your children may have. They are likely going to want to know where they are going to live and how their life is going to change, more than anything else.
  • Don’t tell them the details. Your children do not have to be involved in the fine details. You don’t want to blame your ex and then, they feel the same way. You wouldn’t want it to go the other direction either so keep the details to yourself (and your ex).

Telling your children that you are getting divorced may be one of the hardest conversations that you will ever have. However, if you are prepared and ready for questions, it might go easier than you think. You should also pick a good time. Everyone needs to be relaxed and calm. This is not a question that should be done when everyone is angry.
